hand traced, scanned image of the map - the wrong way round |
Today I have been projecting this image onto paper and red fabric. I was hoping to project it onto my dyed fabric but time ran out. However I was able to get two large scale drawings. One which I projected directly from the website and was able to draw onto it areas within the map i.e. train line, main roads. Using a mixture of marker pen, oil pastels in the same colours as shown on the map which represent main roads (a roads), railway, side roads (b roads). The other large scale drawing I projected the map at different sizes within each other as I may fill these with different colours.
The red fabric feels like a water resistant fabric and I chose it as it reflects the red in one of the photographs I took; it is bold and powerful. The drawing onto the red fabric is the outline of the map with photographs projected onto it, which I drew around. The photographs are of stones and the dry, arid area around the mud flats. I have used colours which I feel represent the stones and mud flats. The lines are soft due to the media used to create the lines.

On this projection I tried to draw in a small boat which is on another photograph but due to the size it just doesn't reflect a boat in my opinion so I will try to blend this in |
the whole of Borth community boundary |
By making each map smaller on the computer I was trying to fit a smaller map into the larger size how when resizing the whole map didn't fit into the larger one hence this pattern was created |
Reflection:
When I scanned the map I should have paid more attention to which way round it was. Infact even better, I could have transferred the file I had saved on my computer at home, to my memory stick then I wouldn't have had to duplicate work
I could have taped down the paper more firmly onto the whiteboard so it didn't move
I did not overfill the red fabric map even though it was temping to do so. I remember previous feedback that I can have a tendancy to over do something rather than keep it simple
Moving forward
Next week I will project this even larger onto roll of backing paper and also a long narrow piece of calico fabric. This may then turn into a tryptych, all different colours and embellishment, threads and textures
I am considering a screen print of the larger map with Borth detail on it. I feel heat transfer will not be able to produce the size I want.
I could print it onto the fabric sheets I have recently tested. I would need to purchase some A3 size. I will discuss with Emma tomorrow.
